Brixton 17

This year the 13th anniversary of the London Nail Bomb attack on Brixton falls on Tuesday 17th April.

Arrangement for this year’s act of remembrance are still pending confirmation with Lambeth’s Hate Crime Co-ordinator Yvonne Okyio and will be added shortly.

It is expected that a small group of people will gather at the Iceland store, Electric Avenue from 6pm onwards, to light three candles at 6.15pm (representing the three communities that were attacked) before walking to Windrush Square. A short act of remembrance will take place around the tree in the square including a minute’s silence and a few words.

Afterwards it has been suggested to go for a meal locally. TBC.

Last year’s act of remembrance to mark the 12th anniversary of the London Nail Bomb attack on Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho took place on the 17th April 2011.

On the day before, Mark and Ryan had circulated cards with the 17-24-30 no to hate crime campaign contact details to local traders reminding them about the anniversary.

On the day itself , a small group gathered at 5.30pm by the Iceland Store on Electric Avenue where the bomb exploded. At 5.45pm Clare, Kevin and Len took turns to light the three candles representing the three communities that had been attacked. There was then a short walk from the market place to Windrush Square where the group gathered by the large tree – holding a two-minute silence at 6.15pm to remember all those who had been injured during the attack.

Mark the organiser of this year’s event said “Whilst today’s gathering was fairly small, it was good to see some people getting together and helping us to raise awareness of this year’s anniversary and the need for us to continue to work together to tackle local hate crime issues.”

More cards were distributed to passers-by, and afterwards the group purchased drinks from the Ritzy cinema and continued to chat with each other in the Square.
