Daniel Zamundio – Chilean victim of vicious hate crime attack

Chile’s president Sebastian Pinera signed an anti-discrimination law on Thursday (12 July 2012) following the killing of Daniel Zamudio in March set off a national debate about hate crimes in Chile.

Wednesday 4th April the Anti-Discrimination Law was approved by the House of Deputies in a close 58-56 vote, seven years after it was first proposed.

Daniel was found beaten and mutilated in “San Borja”  park on Saturday 3rd March 2012 by a policeman at around 4:00 a.m, with swastikas carved into his body. His injuries were so severe that the medical team at Posta Central decided to place him into an induced coma. His head and body had been brutally beaten. Part of one ear had been cut, his legs were broken and he had cuts resembling swastikas on his chest and back. Several cigarette burns were found on different parts of his body.

Hundreds attended a vigil for the 24-year-old in the capital, Santiago, on Wednesday 28 March 2012.

Four suspects were arrested and charged with Daniel’s murder. Raul Alfonso Lopez Fuentes (25), Axel Alejandro Angulo Tapia (26), Patricio Ahumada Ivan Garay (25) and Fabian Alexis Mora Mora (19).
